Korcula Island is one of the greenest and attractive islands in the Adriatic Sea. It is also one of the most popular travel destinations in Dalmatia. The vicinity of Dubrovnik as well as Mljet gives visitors to Korcula unique opportunity to spend time at this Marco Polo's Island as well as to visit Mljet, national park, Dubrovnik, UNESCO's city. Like most of the Croatian islands, the Greeks, first settled Korcula. The island itself is rich in art and culture, as well as beautiful nature such as numerous tiny and secluded beaches and bays, small and uninhabited islands and breathtaking views.
The main town on the island is also named Korcula. According to a local tradition, Marco Polo was born at Korcula in 1254 in family of merchants, although there is no authentic proof of this claim. What is true, however, is that the Republic of Genoa defeated Venice in the Battle of Korcula off the coast of Korcula in 1298 and a galley commander, Marco Polo, was taken prisoner by the victors to eventually spend his time in a Genoese prison writing of his travels.
