Makarska: between mountain and sea |
Makarska is popular tourist destination under the Biokovo mountain, located on a bay between the Biokovo mountain and the Adriatic Sea. The center of Makarska is an old town with narrow stone-paved streets, a main church square where there is a flower and fruit market, and a Franciscan monastery that houses a big sea shell collection. Makarska is the center of the Makarska riviera, which is stretches for 60 km between the towns of Brela and Gradac.Adjacent to the beach are several large capacity hotels as well as a camping ground.
About 30 min drive from Makarska, you can go rafting or kayaking along the Cetina River. The river is generally calm, although there are a few fast places. There is a tour agency that offers guided trips down the river. Also near Makarska, you can visit Biokovo Nature Park, the mountainous area behind Makarska. Although you can walk on foot into the mountains behind Makarska, if you want to reach the best mountainous areas, you'll need to drive to the official park itself.
