Omis: witness of glorious history |
Omis is the perfect destination for those who enjoy both the seaside and the mountains. Numerous monuments from its past are the witnesses of its glorious history; besides these one can find nowadays an interesting and colourful market place, a large number of small restaurants, cafes, various shops and fashionable boutiques. The beautiful Cetina River and it's canyon, nearby mountain tops and islands, ancient vineyards and olive plantations together form the landscape of extraordinary beauty.
The town is situated approximately 25 km (16 miles) south-east of Croatia's second largest city, Split. Its place is where the emerald-green Cetina River meets the Adriatic Sea (Croatian: Jadransko More). Historic names of the city have included: Oneum (Onaeum), Onaion (Oneon), Holm (Hum), Olmisi, Olmissium, Almivssium and Almissa.In the 13th and 14th century Omiš was home of pirates, who used there fast boats (The Arrow) to attach trade ships at the mouth of the River.
